Sting Upended by Mountaineers

The Seneca Sting (0-11) twice trailed by a run, but ultimately fell to the Mohawk Mountaineers (3-6) 5-2 in the first game of their doubleheader.

The Mountaineers jumped on the Sting early, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Undeterred, the Sting responded in the bottom half of the inning. Danielle Pound led off with a single to left field, advanced to second on a ground out by Jasmin Namnama and then scored on a double by Kiara Saito.

After the visitors added a run in the top of the second, the Sting answered back in third inning. Namnama led off with a single and later advanced to second base. A ground out by Alik Derderian advanced Namnama to third where the speedy shortstop later came home on an error.

The Mountaineers added a run in each of the fifth and sixth innings, putting the game out of reach.

Pound, Namnama, Saito and Leeanne Delorme each had a hit for the Sting with Saito recording the lone RBI. Nicole Pearce also reached via walk.

Sephanie Godden (2-for-5), Nicole Gaskin (2-for-3), Meagan Byers (2-for-4) and Madison Brant (2-for-4) each had a multi-hit game for the Mountaineers. Godden scored twice while Ellie Tindale, Alyssa Van Der Werf and Emma Nordoff scored a run apiece for Mohawk.

Kayla Mitched picked up the win for Mohawk, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits, 1 walk and 6 strikeouts. Chantal Gendron allowed 5 runs (3 earned) on 11 hits, 2 walks and 4 strikeouts for the Sting.
