Showdown Resolves Nothing

The Seneca Sting and Algonquin Thunder, winners of each of the last five OCAA Championships, played to a 1-1 draw in their first match up of the season. The results leave the Sting with a 6-0-1 record while the Thunder sit at 4-0-4.

With new faces on both sides of the pitch, it was a lengthy feeling-out process for the two teams. With neither team wanting to give up a scoring opportunity, chances were few and far between in the opening half as the teams were scoreless through forty-five minutes.

Playing on their home turf, the Sting finally broke through in the 70'. Kristen Bettencourt sent a beautiful pass just outside the top left corner of the penalty box. Chantel Cifuentes ran down the pass, made a quick stop to create space between herself and the defender, took a couple steps and fired a long-range shot past the Thunder goalkeeper.

The Thunder struck just minutes later as Victoria Trimble evened the match in the 75'.

Seneca goalkeeper Zoe Rath finished with 5 saves on 9 shot attempts while Algonquin's Kirsten Skinner made 4 saves on 15 shot attempts. The Sting had 4 corner kicks to the Thunder's 3.
