Stretch Safely

Stretch Safely

It is very common to skip stretching after exercising or think of it as a waste of time. But, this is a good time to stretch. Muscles are warm and more pliable post exercise allowing them to lengthen and relax more safely and effectively. This is another reason you should avoid stretching before exercising unless you warm up first. Post exercise stretches done properly helps prevent injuries and muscle soreness, improves performance and is mentally relaxing and promotes body awareness. For post exercise stretches to be safe and effective, hold stretches for about 30 seconds, do not bounce or pulse, breathe comfortably (do not hold your breath) and stretch without pain. Stretch to the point where you begin to feel some resistance to further stretching but no pain.
