Geocaching 101

Now that parks are reopening for foot traffic, it is a great opportunity to get outside and explore our natural world.  Being in and around nature can reduce stress and anxiety, improve overall mental health and your physical health as well.

Geocaching is a great activity to do individually, or with your family.  It is basically a huge scavenger hunt using GPS (Global Positioning System).  You let the app do all of the scientific work, and all you do is the walking.  This is a worldwide game, played on six out of seven continents, with simple rules.

  1. Find the cache
  2. Leave your name or a small token
  3. Leave it behind for someone else to find

It is easy to get started.  Go to www.geocaching.com and register a free account.  Download the free app onto your smartphone, enter a location and then follow your phone to the location of the cache.  All of the instructions, special events and FAQs are at geocaching.com.  Enjoy!
