Sting Come Up Short Twice

Game 1
The Seneca Sting, looking for their first win of the season, battled the Mohawk Mountaineers for seven innings, but came up short in the first game of their double header 6-3.

The Mountaineers opened the scoring in the second inning, scoring three runs off Sting starter Chantel Gendron.

The Sting responded with a pair of runs in the third inning. Nicole Pound singled to left field, driving home Alyssa Jansen and Jasmin Namnama. Two innings later, Namnama scored to tie the game in the fifth inning.

The Mountaineers would score three runs in the top of the seventh on a trio of singles to close out the game.

Namnama led the Sting with a pair of hits and two runs scored. Nicole Pound went 1-for-3 at the plate with a pair of RBIs. Gendron pitched all seven innings, allowing 12 hits, 6 runs (6 earned), 2 walks and striking out 6 batters.

Shelby Hayward was the top batter for the Mountaineers, going 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI. Three other Mountaineers had a multi-hit game. Alyssa Van der werf picked up the win, allowing 5 hits, 3 runs (3 earned) and striking out 2 batters over seven innings.

Game 2
In the most exciting Softball game at Seneca Fields since game two of the double header between the Seneca Sting and Mohawk Mountaineers, the two teams looked ready to repeat their 2017 marathon. In that game, Nicole Pearce hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning to break a 2-2 tie.

In the 2018 version, the Sting held a 4-3 lead going into the top of the seventh. The Mountaineers would score a pair of runs following a lead off hit by Alyx Vachon and Sting error in right field to squeeze out the win.

The Mountaineers opend the scoring in the first inning, only to have Pound drive home Namnama on a single to left field in the bottom half of the inning.

Mohawk scored a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning, but the Sting responded with three runs in the bottom half. Namnama scored Gendron on a double to centre field. Namnama then scored on a double by Jansen, who would put the Sting in the lead thanks to a double by Pound.

Jansen, Pound and Gendron each had two hits for the Sting with Namnama scoring a pair of runs. Gendron allowed 11 hits, 5 runs (2 earned), 2 walks and recorded 6 strikeouts in seven innings of work.

Four Mountaineers finished with two hits. Van der werf picked recoreded her second win of the night, allowing 3 hits and no runs over three innings. Brianne Forti started the game, allowing 7 hits, 4 runs (4 earned), 2 walks and 2 strike outs over four innings.
