Sting Come Up Short Against Hawks

The Seneca Sting (0-9) battled the Humber Hawks (8-1) to the final out, but came up short in the first game of their doubleheader 3-1 at Seneca Fields.

For fans who love to see a pitcher's duel, they were treated to a seven inning battle between the Sting's Chantal Gendron and the Hawks' Kadyn Wotton and Myranda Pierson. The trio of pitchers combined to allow just 4 runs (2 earned) on just 7 hits and striking out 13 batters.

The Sting struck first in the bottom of the second inning. Leeanne Delorme reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second on a ground out by Alik Derderian. With Melissa Wonfor at the plate, Delorme stole third and continued home when the throw evaded the third baseman, rolling to left field.

Gendron held the Hawks scoreless until the fourth inning. Kate Kostuch hit a one out single to right field and advanced to second when the ball bounced past the Sting right fielder. Following a walk by Emily Erskine, Gendron struck out Meaghan Murphy for the second out of the inning. Kate Kostuch and Erskine showed off their speed, executing a double steal to put two runners in scoring position. Julie Kostuch singled to right field, scoring both runners to give the Hawks their first lead of the game.

The Hawks added a run in the seventh inning when Presly Buchanan's single split the Sting middle infielders, scoring Alexa Vassos. Vassos had reached earlier in the inning with a one out double to left field when her hard liner narrowly cleared the outstretched glove of Wonfor in left field.

Danielle Pound had the lone hit for the Sting while Kiara Saito and Wonfor eached reach via walks.

Vassos topped the Hawks at the plate, going 2-for-3. Buchanan, Kate Kostuch, Hannah Koziolek and Julie Kostuch each had a hit for the Hawks.
