Sting Hand Huskies First Loss

The Seneca Sting handed the George Brown Huskies their first loss of the season 73-70 to improve to 5-1 on the season.

In one of the most anticipated games of the OCAA regular season, the two Toronto rivals more than lived up to expectations, providing the packed crowd with a high level of entertainment.

The Huskies came out with the hot hand, opening a 5-0 lead on the defending National Champions. A three-pointer by Dimitri Lim put the Sting on the board, but a 6-0 Huskies run put them up 11-3 less than three and a half minutes into the game. The Sting settled into the game, chipping away at the Huskies' lead before a Nabil Ibrahim jump shot with 56 seconds left in the quarter gave the Sting their first lead. The teams would trade field goals in the final minute as the Sting took a 20-19 lead.

The Sting opened the second quarter on a 12-0 run, punctuated by a Khalil Miller four-point play to put the Sting up 32-19. The Sting would hold the Huskies to just nine points in the quarter as they opened a nine point lead at halftime, 37-28.

The Huskies responded in the third quarter thanks to seven points by Liban Mohamed as the Huskies cut the Sting lead to just three points.

With the crowd on its feet for most of the fourth quarter, the teams fed off the emotion, trading baskets throughout. The Sting built a ten point lead following a Jordan Anderson basket with 4:24 to play, but the Huskies would battle back. Kevon Guiseppi-Mascoe made a three-pointer with 1:14 to play to bring the Huskies within two, but Chris Fields missed an uncontested layup on a breakaway, the Huskies best chance in the final minute to tie the game.

Julio Vazquez led the Sting with 15 points. Daniel Wright and Isaiah Ankra each chipped in 12 points and Lim added 10 points. Khalil Miller had a team-high 11 rebounds.

Mohamad finished with 21 points while Fields (13 points, 6 assists) and Guiseppi-Mascoe (10 points) each reached double digits. Adam Costanzo added 13 rebounds.
