Sting Fall in Winter Semester Opener

The Seneca Sting dropped their second semester opener against the Algonquin Thunder in straight sets 23-25, 15-25, 11-25.

The Sting (2-8) knew they would be in tough against one of the top teams in the OCAA East Division as the Thunder (8-2) entered the match in second place in the division.

The two teams battled back and forth throughout the opening set as the Sting showed glimses of their potential against one of the conference's hottest teams. Entering the match, the Thunder had won seven straight after opening the season with a pair of losses. Zoe Rath saw more court time and took full advantage, making herself a dominant force at the net on both sides of the ball.

The final two sets saw the Thunder play like an OCAA contender, overpowering the Sting in the attack area while thwarting Sting efforts with great defense. The Thunder jumped out to early leads in both sets and closed out the match with two dominant sets.

Rath (6 kills, 7 digs, 2 blocks) and Nicole Boyd (6 kills, 7 digs) led the Sting offensively. New addition Elizabeth Chow had 5 kills in her Sting debut. Taylor Butcher led the Sting with 9 digs while Gen Potovszky added 17 assists.

The Thunder were led by Breanne Scheerhoorn's 8 kills to go along with 10 digs and 3 aces. Tatiana Weissflog (6 kills) and Rylee Leger (6 kills) each contributed in the win offensively. Marie-Chantal Ozorak had a match-high 18 digs and Sidney Sletcher added 22 assists and 11 digs.
