Sting Announce Nailer as Baseball Coach

The Seneca Sting is excited to announce the hiring of Matthew Nailer as the new Men’s Baseball Head Coach.

Nailer brings thirty years of baseball experience to the position including more than fifteen years as a coach in both the secondary school environment and club system.

A high school teacher in the Toronto District School Board, Nailer’s passion for both academics and sport is what drew him to Seneca.

“The college’s reputation and commitment to athletics and academics attracted me to the position. It has been a personal goal of mine to coach at the college level and work with athletes of this caliber.”

A former student-athlete, having competed for York University where he was a three-year team captain, Nailer has a clear vision for what he is looking for in a student-athlete for his team.

“Dedication and a commitment to academics and athletics first and foremost are traits I look for in a potential student-athlete. I want someone who is a team-first type of person who understands the dynamics of working in a team environment. I want someone who shows a willingness and desire to learn and improve as well as someone who exhibits leadership both on and off the field.”

A product of the Leaside Leafs Baseball Club, Nailer has been a part of six Greater Toronto Baseball League champions. Most recently, Nailer led the Leafs to a bronze medal at the 2014 Ontario Championship and two GTBL regular season pennants.

With the Sting looking to reach the OCAA Championship for the first time in their five-year history, it is believed that Nailer will be the perfect fit to help elevate the program by creating a foundation for success. With recruitment as one of his primary responsibilities at the club level, Nailer has successfully recruited multiple GTBL Rookie of the Year award recipients, a trait that will serve him well in the OCAA.

Looking toward September, Nailer is already anxious to begin offseason workouts as he looks to construct his style of team.

“I’m looking to field a team that will compete each and every game, be strong defensively and play an aggressive style of baseball on offence.”

“Matthew brings a passion for providing our student-athletes with a well-balanced approach to sport development and education. His dedication to the growth and development of student-athletes aligns with our department’s goals and will benefit both current and future student-athletes.”

Men’s Baseball tryouts will commence in August. The OCAA regular season begins the first week of September.
