Leung Selected to Lead Sting
The Seneca Sting is pleased to announce the hiring of Rick Leung as the new Badminton Head Coach.
Leung brings more than a decade of coaching experience at both the collegiate and club levels.
John Sharpe, Manager of Athletics and Recreation feels that Leung will be a great fit with the Badminton team as well as with the Sting.
“Rick brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience. We look forward to seeing Rick take the helm of this team!”
An NCCP Certified Badminton Coach, Leung’s coaching approach includes sport specific conditioning exercises and drills as well as the application of statistical management techniques to maximize the development of student-athletes.
Leung shared his vision as to what he is looking for in a student-athlete and how he plans to maximize their potential.
“A successful athlete is one who is strong physically and mentally. Physical strength is utilized to perform. Mental strength is the key to perpetually push the boundaries through desire, dedication, and perseverance. As a coach, my role is to provide the guidance and support to each athlete with the goal of reaching their full potential.”
Leung’s approach and philosophies have proven successful in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA). During previous coaching positions at Mohawk College and Centennial College, Leung helped guide nine teams to OCAA medals, including three OCAA Champions.
These previous coaching experiences have helped prepare Leung for his new role with the Sting
“My previous coaching experiences have granted me the opportunity to work with athletes of diverse backgrounds and skill-sets, therefore honing my ability to assess their current state and develop training programs tailored to their development. Furthermore, I have gained valuable experience through working with and learning from many of the seasoned OCAA badminton coaches.”
With just over two months before tryouts begin, Leung knows he must work quickly to prepare if the team is going to meet his expectations for the 2018-19 season.
“I expect all athletes to bring a positive attitude with plenty of team spirit. I expect everyone to support each other as we explore what our current limits are and aim to exceed them.”
The Sting will compete in a number of invitational tournaments prior to the East Regional on February 1-2, 2019 at George Brown College. The OCAA Championship will be hosted February 15-16, 2019 at the University of Toronto Mississauga.
