Adjei Returns Home

The Seneca Sting are pleased to announce that Felix Adjei has been named the Women’s Basketball interim head coach.

Adjei will take over for head coach Lexie Sananes who will be taking a leave of absence from the team, but Adjei stresses that this is still Sananes’ team and is thankful for the opportunity.

“I want to thank coach Lexie for giving me the opportunity and for sharing her coaching knowledge. I know that she is always a call away.”

Following an abbreviated 2021-22 season which saw the Sting go winless, the first-year head coach has been active in recruiting and enters the season with a clear vision for the Sting team.

“Our mantra for the year is ‘Be the Change’. All of us will be held accountable for what we do for ourselves individually and as a team” commented Adjei.

Although it will be Adjei’s first collegiate coaching position, Adjei has been quickly building an impressive resume at the grassroots level. With experience in the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) and Ontario Basketball Association (OBA), Adjei’s focus on player development should have a quick impact on the team.

“My coaching experience will allow us to reach our players at their own individual levels. We will share knowledge and put players in the right opportunities. A theme that will be pushing this year is consistency while teaching the importance of progression and development.”

Adjei, a Sting alum, played five seasons with the Men’s Basketball team (2009-11/2012-15) where he was named a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) All-Canadian (2012-13) after leading the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) East Division in scoring. Adjei currently sits in eighth spot on the OCAA Career Scoring Leaders list with 1,528 points.

Adjei’s success as a student-athlete will be important in connecting with student-athletes while being able to provide relatable experiences from his time representing the Sting.

“My experiences as a player will be vital in my role. Each of our coaches has experience playing against OCAA and CCAA competition. This allows us to lead by example and relate to the players on a more personal level.”

A familiar face in the department from his time as a student-athlete, Varsity Manager John Sharpe has remained in communication with Adjei throughout his coaching journey and was quick to reach out to Adjei after receiving the news of Sananes’ leave of absence. The familiarity Sharpe had with Adjei as a person and coach was what brought Adjei back to the Sting for this role.

“I had the pleasure of watching and working with Felix when he was a student. Felix has continued to grow from his time as a standout basketball player, a student leader with the Student Athletic Association (SAA) and Varsity Council as well as coaching Newnham’s (Campus) Extramural Men’s Basketball team. Felix has put in the time to learn the coaching side of the sport, built relationships and will be an asset to our Women’s Basketball team. We appreciate his willingness to jump in and support this program for us.”

Tryouts for the Women's Basketball team will commence on September 12. The Sting will begin the regular season on October 28 at George Brown.
