Sting Set to Host CCAA Championship

Seneca Polytechnic will host the 2024 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Badminton National Championships.

The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) institution will host the event February 28 to March 2, 2024, in King City, ON.

Gillian McCullough and John Sharpe will serve as co-chairpersons for the CCAA Championships.

“With a core of dedicated and experienced staff, combined with eager and capable volunteers, Seneca is eager to produce a positive student-athlete experience that showcases the talented student-athletes competing in the CCAA Badminton National Championships,” said McCullough, Director of Sport and Recreation at Seneca.

All matches will be held at Magna Hall, which is located on the King Campus. Opened in 2018, Magna Hall has excellent facilities, and the large double gymnasium will be a welcome competition site for student-athletes, coaches, and spectators.

“The Sting last hosted Badminton Nationals in 2017 which has often been regarded as one of the greatest championships in our sport over the past 20 years,” said Michael Kopinak, CCAA Badminton Convenor. “Now back as host in 2024 at their beautiful King Campus, Seneca is sure to put on a quality championship that our student-athletes will remember for a lifetime.”

In addition to hosting the 2017 CCAA Badminton National Championships, the Sting has also hosted CCAA Women’s Volleyball (2014) and CCAA Cross-Country Running (2018) in recent years.

The Sting is one of the most-decorated athletic programs in OCAA history, having won more than 500 medals since 1967. Seneca has also hosted numerous OCAA Championships recently. The Sting hosted OCAA Badminton Championships in 2016 and once again in 2023.

Student-athletes from Seneca have had recent success at CCAA Championships, particularly at the 2022 CCAA Badminton National Championships, where the Sting hauled in plenty of hardware – gold medals in Women’s Singles and Men’s Doubles along with silver medals in Women’s Singles and Men’s Singles.

Seneca Polytechnic is located on the lands of the traditional territories of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and of the Williams Treaties First Nations.
