Title Defense Ends in Semi-Final

The Seneca Sting were unable to generate enough scoring opportunities and saw their national title defense end against the Nomades de Montmorency 1-0.

The Sting came out quickly against the Nomades, winners against Vancouver Island University in the quarter-final 1-0. Unable to score the opening goal, the Nomades countered and were awarded a corner kick. Following a beautifully struck corner kick, the Nomades outlept the Sting to head the ball into the net to open the scoring in the 18th minute.

From there, the Nomades went on the defense as the Sting controlled nearly 90 percent of the action in the first half. An injury just before halftime to OCAA Player of the Year and CCAA All-Canadian Marlene Siwula seemed to slow the Sting attack who were also short Taliyah Hutton who went down with an injury earlier in the half, but returned later in the match.

The best opportunity for the Sting in the second half came midway through the half when a long-struck shot from well outside the box struck the crossbar.

As the clock ticked away on their championship defense, Yoana Peralta dribbled the ball near the end line and sent a crossing attempt towards three Sting players who were left open in front of the Nomades' goal. Due to the speed of the pass and low trajectory, Kayla Uddenberg was unable to direct the ball toward the gaping goal as the header just missed outside the post.

Manmeet Atwal was named Player of the Match for the Sting, playing another strong game on the back end.

The Sting will take on Capilano University in the bronze semi-final on Friday at 12:30pm PST (3:30pm EST).
